Job Purpose:
To lead the in-house litigation function by managing assigned legal files, supervising Associate Advocates, and ensuring the consistent and efficient handling of litigation matters across all regions. The Legal Team Leader will also oversee the establishment and operationalization of the in-house litigation team, ensuring alignment with legal standards, company policies, and strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Litigation Management
Manage a portfolio of active litigation files across various jurisdictions.
Represent the company in court or oversee internal legal representation in civil, employment, insurance, or regulatory matters.
Develop strategies for case handling, risk mitigation, and settlement negotiations.
Monitor and review all court matters to ensure timely filing of pleadings, court attendance, and compliance with procedural timelines.
2. Team Leadership and Supervision
Supervise Associate Advocates and legal officers handling litigation files.
Provide mentorship, performance feedback, and capacity building for junior team members.
Allocate files and oversee quality assurance on all legal pleadings, reports, and case strategies.
Encourage knowledge sharing and collaboration across the team.
3. Establishment of In-House Litigation Team
Drive the establishment, structure, and staffing of a dedicated in-house litigation team.
Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs), workflows, and service standards for internal litigation handling.
Collaborate with HR and Legal leadership to recruit, train, and induct new team members.
4. Regional Coordination and Consistency
Ensure uniform legal processes, documentation standards, and litigation strategies across all regions.
Liaise with regional offices to support legal compliance and coordination in court matters.
Conduct periodic audits or reviews of litigation files to maintain quality and consistency.
5. Reporting and Compliance
Prepare and present regular updates on litigation trends, exposures, and risks to management.
Ensure compliance with internal legal policies, regulatory requirements, and ethical standards.
Liaise with external counsel when necessary and manage outsourced legal services efficiently.
Qualifications & Experience:
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized university.
Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law.
Current Practicing Certificate.
At least 5 years post-admission experience in civil litigation.
Insurance litigation experience is an added advantage.
